Since 1982, the Carter Thor Studio has been working to help actors, writers, directors, producers, and artists of many disciplines to mine, define, and refine their crafts.
Cameron Thor worked as a private acting coach under the wings of legendary coach Roy London for three years, before Roy insisted that Cameron start his own classes. The Studio began as the Cameron Thor Studio in 1982 with eight original students in a borrowed room in Hollywood. Joined by another key disciple of London’s, Alice Carter, Cameron and Alice became partners as well as husband and wife and created the Carter Thor Studio. Now, along with their staff and teachers, including Jock MacDonald, and Susie and Leo Park, the Carter Thor Studio stretches from coast to coast and across international borders.
Over the years actors like Cameron Diaz, Drew Carey, Christina Applegate, Tom Welling, Chris Klein, Jamie King, Faye Dunaway, Sylvester Stallone, David Arquette, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Djimon Hunsou and many more have emerged from the Studio’s ranks and risen to great heights in the industry. A number of other alumni and current students have gone on to create and produce feature films and television series, award winning shorts, and original plays. In ten short years the Carter Thor Studio has proven to be a creative center like no other for the growth and blossoming of new talent.
The future is bright for the Studio and its members, with national and international seminars, new Studios in New York and soon Vancouver, and a tape and book series. With all this focused expansion, the classes at the Studio remain intimate and intense, never betraying their original purpose. And while the breadth, reach, and size of the Studio has changed considerably in the last ten years, the philosophy that made the Studio so successful to begin with has not; the future belongs to the Artists. The highly touted age of information is passing and the modern world is in the first stages of the age of communication. The ability to take complicated ideas and themes and deliver them in a simple and digestible package is the key to success in the new age, and great actors, writers, and directors are the masters of this discipline. They are our Creative Heroes. We hold them out as mirrors to help us find our way, laugh at our fools, weep at our sorrows, and challenge us to live better lives. Show business has spilled out into every aspect of our society. The people who communicate with storytelling have graced our movie screens, television tubes, and even our oval office. Actors, writers, directors, and producers have knitted their skills into the cultural fabric and dreams of modern life. Training them to be the best at what they do is the Carter Thor Studio’s deepest pleasure and highest purpose.
