Solstice Letter 2011

We look around us…this world we are in now…and what we see looks like chaos.  All the rules, boundaries, formulas, systems, and beliefs are shaking and seem to be crumbling away.  In our lives we once again are struggling for meaning and purpose.  What we thought would be our success; our wonderful career, our glorious journey to the top, eludes us, and not only looks impossible, but also ridiculous. This business we are in seems to be dissolving before our eyes, and our special place in it seems to have disappeared.  I don’t know about you, but my three year plan looks like a joke.

We are not the successful, fulfilled artist we were sure we would be by now.  Even if we have had some good successes, we still feel lacking….not enough. Some of us are still waiting for that big break that will make us a star, and yet we are still settling for that page and a half as “terrorist #1”, or that hemorrhoid commercial…if that!  I know many actors who didn’t work at all this year, even though they have great reputations and made lots of money in the past.  For God’s sake, we are ____ years old!  What the hell happened! So what do we do?  How much longer can we wait table? How much longer can we stand these meaningless roles? How much longer will the unemployment last? How much longer can I depend on the government, my parents, my significant other and still feel like a real artist?
