F.A.Q
What makes Carter Thor Studios Unique?
Our studio is unique in that we focus on the individual needs of each actor. The studio's goal is to push you to be the best version of yourself, not to teach a uniform way of performing.
How are you different from other studios?
Our classes are different in that we run on an on-going basis, much like a gym where students' participation is constant. Just as a dancer or singer must continue to train between jobs so must actors. Our studio provides you a safe place to do just that, so you are ready when your agent calls you for that next audition.
How can I audit?
Contact you city's manager and arrange a date to visit class. Your first audit is free.
Do I have to audition to get in?
No. All that is required is auditing a class to see how we work, then meeting our coach Jock to chat about the studio to ensure it is a good fit for you, and that you are able to commit to the studio's expectations of rehearsals and professionalism.
How long does it take to see a difference in my acting?
Your growth as an actor is a personal journey with Jock and is different for each student. On average, 3 months in the studio will allow Jock the time he needs to get to know you, your strengths, weaknesses, habits and fears. He will work with you individually to bring the best version of yourself into your acting, then push you to the next level.
How often do I get to act?
Six to eight scenes are presented in each class. Depending on your course size you can expect to work an average of four out of five classes. You should be prepared to work every week. A rotating roster is kept by the course monitor to insure fair participation for everyone in the course.
How much time per class will I be coached?
Your coaching will vary depending on the work you do. It can vary from 20 minutes to an hour depending on what Jock wants you to achieve. You will also benefit from the coaching and analysis of other students in class when you are not performing.
Who chooses the scenes I perform?
Jock MacDonald selects the scenes for partners from a large library of film and television scripts according to the tools, skills, and areas each individual may be developing.
How much does it cost?
$250 Canadian, or $220 USD per month.
If I miss a class do I still pay?
Unfortunately we cannot reimburse you for classes missed.
How many weeks is the course?
The courses run on an on-going basis, with each session being 4 weeks in a month. You would attend 1 class per week. When there are 5 weeks in a month, one week is taken off. Breaks are also taken during the Christmas holidays, and in the spring and fall.
What is the auditor program?
The auditor program allows you to sit in the classes and watch, but not perform. This allows you a stress-free way of absorbing Jock's analysis of other students. Once in the auditor program you can audit any of the classes in the US or Canada. You would be registered in one class that you would be expected to attend, on time, and in full, like a regular student, and the other classes you'd like to visit are optional.
Can I audit other classes?
Students can audit any class in the U.S. and Canada once you are enrolled.
Do you do any productions?
Each studio works individually on both theatre and film productions. Just ask the class monitor who to contact in your city to get involved. Do you have a project you'd like to start? Just speak with the monitor and it can be announced.
Do you have a beginner's class?
No we do not have a class for beginners. All classes are taught at the same level. We mix all ranges of ability together as that is how it will be on set. Students need to learn how to give their best performance whether they are working opposite someone who has been in the business 30 years, or 30 days.
Can I take more than one Class?
It is possible if there is space, but would require a lot of time and commitment on your part, as you are required to rehearse 3 times prior to performing each new scene. You would have to speak to the studio manager and have this approved by Jock.
How long is your waiting list?
The waiting list varies from month to month, but it's always best to email the studio manager if you are interested, as the waiting list is only a rough guide to who will be accepted into the studio. Enthusiasm and commitment count for a lot.
Do you shoot on camera?
We currently do not shoot on camera, as we believe more can be accomplished without it. Time is saved and students aren't distracted by it. The focus is on your work and scene analysis.
How many students per class?
Evening classes are capped at 20 students, the afternoon classes are capped at 18.
Can I get a private coaching with Jock?
